Everyone remembers Wayne Gretzky leading the Edmonton Oilers dynasty of the 1980’s, but even the Great One acknowledges much of that success would not have been possible without goalie Grant Fuhr. The first black player inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, Fuhr spent more than 20 years in the NHL with the Oilers and later the Toronto Maple Leafs, Buffalo Sabres, St. Louis Blues, Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames. In the 1987-88 season, Grant Fuhr won the Vezina Trophy as the NHL’s best goalie, and actually finished ahead of Gretzky in the MVP voting, although he still came in second to Mario Lemieux. Either way, it sounds like good company to be a part of. Even though injuries limited playing time later in his career, Fuhr retired with over 400 victories, ranking him among the top goaltenders of all time. After retiring in 2001, Fuhr turned to coaching and was reunited with Gretzky on the Phoenix Coyotes’ coaching staff.
