As the 27th pick by the New Jersey Devils in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft, the first Scott Gomez appearance marked the first time a Latino player took the ice in the NHL. He was also the first Alaskan to play in the league.
Gomez began his pro hockey career playing for the Tri-City Americans of the WHL, where he was named to the WHL’s All-Rookie Team. Impressing the hockey world with his superb skills, Gomez earned a spot on the WHL West First All-Star Team during his first season. He was also awarded the Calder Trophy as the league’s top rookie. Gomez won two Stanley Cups with the Devils before he signed a seven year contract with the New York Rangers in July 2007.
