The first Scott Stevens appearance in the NHL instantly made an impact, scoring his first shot in his first NHL game. He was drafted fifth overall by the Washington Capitals in the 1982 NHL Entry Draft, where his exceptional defensive and offensive plays helped the team to its first Memorial Cup victory. He was also named to the All-Rookie Team and led all rookie defensemen in penalty minutes. Stevens was the third choice for the Calder Memorial Trophy, awarded to the league’s Rookie of the Year. He led the team in PIMs five times over his career with the Capitals, setting the team record for most career penalty minutes by a defenseman.
Stevens spent a season in St. Louis, then continued his career with the New Jersey Devils, where he captained the team to four Stanley Cup Finals in nine years. Stevens led the team to victory three of those Stanley Cup Finals. In 2000, Stevens was awarded the Conn Smythe Trophy for being the MVP of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Stevens was forced to retire after an injury, and in 2007, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on his first year of eligibility.
