Brett Bodine was inspired by his brother, Geoff, to embark on a racing career of his own. In 1977 he began in hobby stock races, and, in 1979, he moved up to the modifieds. In 1983, he had a record of 56 starts, six wins, 20 top fives, and 30 top tens in route to seventh in the overall modifieds standings. He also won the Stafford 200, his first NASCAR Modified National Championship event. In 1984, in Oxford, Maine, he won another National Championship event.

In 1986, he made four modified starts, winning two NASCAR Modified National Championship events and also joined the Winston Cup.
