At a young age, Casey Atwood became interested in racing and, by the age of 10, was racing go-karts. His passion later progressed to Late Model Stock racing, and by the age of 15 he was sure of his professional future. The future came to fruition in 1996 when he was awarded rookie of the year at Nashville Speedway USA.

The first Casey Atwood appearance on the NASCAR scene was in 1996 during a Craftsman Truck Series race. He reappeared in the 1998 NASCAR Busch Series to win his second Busch Series race at the age of 17, making him the youngest driver ever to win a Busch Series pole. He again won in the 1999 Busch series event.

When Atwood made it to the Nextel/Sprint Cup Series of racing, which he joined in 2001, he reached third place in the Winston Cup Rookie of the Year standings, adding to his allure as a young driver reaching stardom at a fast and furious pace.
