Ricky Rudd’s passion for racing began as a teenager. He participated in go-karts and motocross. The first Ricky Rudd appearance in NASCAR was at North Carolina Speedway in 1975, when he drove for Bill Champion. He ran three more races for Champion, his best finish being a 10th at Bristol Motor Speedway. In 1976, he drove four races for his father, posting another 10th finish at the Firecracker 400. In 1977, he became full-time. He had 10 top-ten finishes and was named Rookie of the Year. In 1991, he won at the Darlington Raceway with Tide as his new sponsor.
Rudd took Tide and formed Rudd Performance Motorsports, his own race team in 1994. His fifth-place points finish at New Hampshire International Speedway was his first win as an owner/driver. Rudd got his first win in three years at Pocono Raceway, followed by another victory late in the season at Richmond. He won at Infineon in 2002 and his final career pole at Talladega Superspeedway in 2004. His best finish since his return to the sport was a seventh at the Coca-Cola 600. Rudd finished his career with a 21st place finish at the Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami.
