The first Ryan Newman appearance on the competitive racing scene was at the All-American Midget Series in 1993, where he won both the Rookie of the Year award and the championship. He was inducted into the Quarter Midget Hall of fame because of his 100 feature wins and two titles. In 1996 he was again Rookie of the Year in both the Midget Series and the Silver Crown. In 1999, he was the first driver to win in all three divisions while being the Silver Bullet Series champion.
In 2000, Newman started working for legendary racing icon Roger Penske. He won three of the five ARCA RE/MAX Series races he entered, and made his Winston Cup debut at Phoenix International Raceway. He continued in both ARCA and NASCAR in 2001 while pursuing his college degree.
In 2002, Newman set a new record with his season-high six poles. He also won his first career Busch Series race and his first career Winston Cup race. In 2003, Newman participated in the Daytona 500, where his team had eight wins and 11 poles, both series highs. In 2004, Newman finished seventh in points with two wins at the Chase for the Cup. The next year, he made the Chase again and won his second New Hampshire victory. After four years, he returned to the Busch Series and won six out of the nine races he entered, including a series-record five straight. Newman also won the 2008 Daytona 500.
