Throughout his college career, Al Joyner competed with Arkansas State University’s track and field team. By the time he graduated, Joyner was a three-time NCAA All-American indoor champion, a three-time NCAA All-American outdoor champion, and a four-time Southland Conference champion. He also was awarded eighth place in the triple jump at the World Championships in Helsinki, Finland.
The first Al Joyner appearance on the Olympic scene was in 1984 when he won a gold medal in the triple jump event for the US Olympic track and field team. His leap of 17.26m (56’-7.5”) earned him the honor of being the only American in 80 years to win the event. Joyner was also a recipient of the Jim Thorpe Award, which is given every four years to the best American competitor in an Olympic Field Event.
Joyner took with him 15 years of coaching experience when he joined the University of California UCLA in Los Angeles’ track and field staff as an Assistant Coach/Women’s Jump Coach in August 2000.
Because of his outstanding track and field record, he was inducted into the Arkansas State University Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1993, the Arkansas Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1997, and the Illinois Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1999.
