Biography

Alicia Sacramone’s natural flexibility was enhanced by her training in dance which began at the age of three. At the age of eight, she began training in gymnastics, and began competing in 2002. A year after, she joined the US National Team, and has been a key member since. Sacramone trained under Mihai and Silvia Brestyan at the Gymnastics and More Club, with the Brestyans still serving as her coach.

Upon entering the elite ranks in 2002, an Alicia Sacramone appearance in the junior division of the 2002 US Classic Competition earned her seventh in the all-around and sixth on the vault. With her performance improving every year, she won a bronze medal on the vault at the 2003 US Nationals, and earned a spot on the US National gymnastics team.

The first Alicia Sacramone appearance on the international scene was at the 2003 Massilia Cup in France, where she ranked fourth on the floor exercise and ninth on vault. In 2004, she became a member of the American Team that competed in the Pacific Alliance Championships in Hawaii. There, she helped the team win the gold medal and also won an individual vault title for herself. This spectacular Alicia Sacramone appearance caught the attention of the media, and she was then considered a legitimate competitor at the 2004 Olympics.

Sacramone has won two golds, three silvers, and two bronzes at the World Championships, making her the third American gymnast to hold the most World Championship medals. Sacramone also won the silver medal at the 2008 Olympics.
