Biography

For nearly two decades, women’s gymnastics was synonymous with the name Bela Karolyi. Born in Romania, Karolyi innovated a new gymnastics-training program in the 1960s and 1970s and soon the world took notice of one of his first students, Nadia Comaneci. Karolyi led Comaneci to victory as the head coach of the Romanian team at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics. Soon after, Karolyi, along with his wife, Marta, relocated to Houston, Texas, where they built a gym and training facilities on a ranch. In 1984, he made his debut on the U.S. Olympics team as the coach of all-around champion Mary Lou Retton.

By 1988, Karolyi was head coach of the U.S. team, but he is perhaps best remembered for the 1996 Olympic team, which featured the “Magnificent Seven,” including Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes, Dominique Moceanu and Kerri Strug, and ultimately won the team gold medal. Karolyi retired from coaching shortly thereafter but he and his wife still run a gymnastics camp.

Trying to organize a Bela Karolyi appearance at your event can be trickier than sticking a full twisting double back in the floor exercise competition. With a track record that speaks for itself, TSE can handle all the Bela Karolyi speaker negotiations for you so that your event gets a perfect score from all the attendees.
