The first Bill Rodgers appearance on the national marathon stage was a phenomenon. Between 1975 and 1980, Rodgers won both the Boston Marathon and the New York City Marathon four times. He also won in the 1977 Fukuoka Marathon. In 1979, Rodgers broke the American record at Boston twice. A Bill Rodgers appearance also took place in the 1976 Olympics, finishing 40th in the race.
In 1975, Rodgers placed third at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships, the highest an American had ever finished in an international cross country competition. He is also a former world record holder for 25 kilometers.
In 1999, Rodgers was voted to the National Track and Field Hall of Fame. The previous year, he was inducted into the National Distance Running Hall of Fame.
