As one of the top male swimmers of the past decade, Brendan Hansen has set numerous records, earned many medals and become an ambassador for the sport. Born in 1981 in Havertown, Pennsylvania, Hansen attended the University of Texas at Austin. While swimming for the Texas Longhorns, Hansen set many NCAA records in breaststroke events, which are his specialization. Hansen graduated with a degree in kinesiology in 2005, but it was the year before that in which Hansen had gained worldwide attention for his performance at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
In the first Brendan Hansen appearance at the Olympics, the swimmer took home a gold medal in the medley relay, in which his team set a world record, a silver medal for the 100 meter breaststroke and a bronze medal for the 200 meter breaststroke. Hansen continues to better his own records and he set new ones twice in 2006. In addition to his Olympic success, Hansen has earned a combined 12 gold medals from the World Championships Long Course, World Championships Short Course and Pan Pacific Championships.
