Brian Boitano is arguably the most popular male figure skater of the past 25 years. A gold medal winner at the 1988 Olympic Games, Boitano first gained attention for winning the bronze medal in the 1978 World Junior Figure Skating Championships. By 1984, he had earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic team, and in 1985 and 1986, he won back-to-back U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Boitano had developed a reputation as a technical proficient skater lacking in artistry, so prior to the 1988 Olympic Games he hired a new choreographer. His new routine earned him the 1988 national title as well as a gold medal in the Olympics. Upon turning professional, Boitano exhibited the same talent and added 10 consecutive professional victories to his resume. He finished sixth in the 1994 Olympics and returned to the professional circuit. He is a member of both the U.S. and World Figure Skating Halls of Fame.
