Derek Parra has set records and won medals as one of the fastest American speed skaters. Born in San Bernardino, California, Parra got his start as an inline speed skater. He won a world championship in that sport but traded concrete for the ice to realize his dream of competing in the Olympic Games. By 2002, his dream came true as Parra earned a spot on the U.S. Olympic men’s speed skating team in Salt Lake City.
