Title: Olympic Gold MedalistDominique Dawes rose to international stardom as a member of the 1996 gold medal-winning U.S. Women’s Gymnastic Team. A crowd favorite for her enthusiasm and energy, Dawes first became involved with gymnastics at the age of six in her home state of Maryland. It was then that Dawes met Kelli Hill, who coached Dawes throughout her career. Dawes gained national attention with her floor exercise and successfully landed a spot on the 1992 U.S. Olympic team headed for Barcelona. There the team earned bronze medals, making Dawes, then 15, and teammate Betty Okino the first African-Americans to medal in gymnastics.
Between the 1993 and 1994 World Championships, Dawes added three more silver medals to her burgeoning collection. She earned the nickname “Awesome Dawesome” for her tumbling feats and was an integral player on the 1996 U.S. Olympic team dubbed “The Magnificent Seven.” In Atlanta, the team became the first Americans to win the team gold medal, and Dawes received her first individual Olympic medal, a bronze for floor exercise. Dawes competed again in the 2000 Olympics when the team finished fourth, and in 2002, graduated from the University of Maryland. Dominique Dawes appears currently as an actress, model and private gymnastics coach at her hometown gym.
