Biography

Heiden had a short but extraordinary speed skating career. Of the six gold medals that the United States won at the 1980 Olympic Winter Games in Lake Placid, Heiden won five. He won a total of eight World Championship titles, with seven gold medals and one silver. He broke several world records in both all-around and sprinting distances and set 15 world records.

He won the Oscar Mathisen Award from 1977 until 1980. As of 2006, he is still the only skater who has won the award four times. He also received the 1980 James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States. Heiden also won the Oscar-statuette four times in the years 1977 to 1980, making him the only one who has won the award more than twice. He was also named the 46th greatest athlete of the 20th century by ESPN Sports Century.

There was also an Eric Heiden appearance in the professional road bicycle racing scene shortly after his speed-skating career. He became one of the founding members of the 7-Eleven Cycling Team. He won the 1985 USPro Championships and was a member of the first US team to join the Tour de France. In 1999, he was inducted into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame.

Heiden earned his MD from Stanford University in 1991. He began practicing as an orthopedic surgeon in Sacramento, California and served as team physician for the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and the Sacramento Monarchs. Heiden was also team physician for the US Olympic Speed Skating Team in 2002 and 2006.
