Four-time Olympic sprinter and hurdler Gail Devers has won over the hearts of Americans across the country with her dedication and perseverance. In 1988, Devers, the daughter of a Baptist minister and a California native, suffered from a devastating thyroid condition called Graves’ Disease that doctors feared would force the amputation of her feet. But Devers persevered, and treatment allowed her to control the disease. In 1992, Devers made her first appearance at the Olympic Games in Barcelona and returned from Spain with a gold medal for the 100 meter event. At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Devers added two more gold medals to her collection, another for the 100 meters (making her only the second woman in history to win consecutive medals in the event) and one for the 100 meter relay. Devers also competed in the 2000 and 2004 Olympics. She is a three-time World Champion and a nine-time U.S. Champion.
