Heather O’Reilly played for both UNC and the New Jersey Wildcats of the W-League as a striker. The first Heather O’Reilly appearance with the US Women’s National Team was in March 2002 in a game against Sweden.
During the 2004 Olympics, O’Reilly scored the game-winning goal against Germany in the quarterfinals. The US team then went on to defeat Brazil in the finals, winning the gold medal.
In the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup, O’Reilly saved the US team by scoring against North Korea in the 69th minute, which tied the game and saved the Americans from an opening-round loss. USA eventually went on to win the bronze.
O’Reilly currently wear #9 for the national team, which was made famous by Mia Hamm. In 2007, she was nominated as Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the year. The following year, her jersey #20 was retired from the UNC women’s soccer team.
