During high school, track coaches recognized Gatlin’s potential to be a sprinter and recruited him for track. After two years’ training, he competed at the NCAA and won six consecutive titles. In 2002, he left UT to join the professional ranks, and in 2004, he won the gold medal at the Summer Olympics. He also won a bronze medal in the 200m race, and a silver as a member of the 4x100m relay squad. In 2005, he captured the gold medal at the World Athletics Championships. Gatlin’s Olympic 100m final time is still the second fastest in Olympic history.
At the 2005 World Championships, he bagged two gold medals in the 100m and 200m races, making him the second person in athletics history to win both sprint distances during a single World Championship.
In 2006, Gatlin received a four year ban from track and field after being reported to have allegedly used performance enhancing drugs. He did, however, claim his innocence in the matter. Gatlin is attempting to serve his four year ban on the football field. Following the 2007 NFL Draft, Gatlin worked out with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Tennessee Titans in hopes of being a wide receiver.
