Kiraly entered his first beach tournament at the age of 11 and led Santa Barbara High School to an undefeated season in 1978. He was named Best Male Volleyball Player in the World in 1986 and 1988 by FIVB. In 1986, he was part of the World Championships team that won first place. Kiraly was the only player to win Olympic medals in both indoor and beach volleyball.
Following the 1988 Olympics, he retired from the national team. In total, Kiraly won a record of 148 professional beach volleyball titles. He and partner Kent Steffes became the first to win the men’s Olympic beach volleyball tournament in 1996. Kiraly was also the first to surpass the $3 million milestone in volleyball. He was named to the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2001.
