Klete Keller attended college for two years, but dropped out to focus on his swimming career. As a college student, he won individual and relay Pac-10 and NCAA Championships in the 200, 500, and 1650 yard freestyle, and freestyle relays.
Keller won a number of US National Titles and FINA World Championship medals, his forte being the 200 and 400m freestyle and the 4x200m free relay. His medal count also includes two golds and a bronze at the Pan Pacific Games, four golds and three bronzes at the World Championships, and two golds, one silver, and two bronzes at the Olympics.
Keller was able to beat Ian Thorpe during the 2004 Summer Olympics, the first time Australia had been beaten in the 4x200m freestyle relay in over seven years. Since then, the American relay of Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Peter Vanderkaay, and Keller have remained at the top of the relay world.
