Even as a freshman in high school, Lindsay Tarpley was able to prove her excellent soccer skills as she helped her team reach the state semi-finals. The next year, as a mere freshman, Tarpley led her team to an undefeated season and the state championship. She received numerous accolades during high school, such as 2002 Gatorade Player of the Year for the state. There was also a Lindsay Tarpley appearance as a starting point guard with the varsity basketball team.
As she entered college in 2002, Tarpley was named ACC Rookie of the Year and the Soccer America and Soccer Buzz National Freshman of the Year. During her second year, she led the nation in total points and helped the Tar Heels to the NCAA championship. For her performance during that season, Tarpley received honors such as ACC Player of the Year and Player of the Tournament, National Player of the Year, and several All-America team honors. Injuries reduced her playing time during her junior and senior seasons, although she still managed to be part of the All-ACC and NSCAA All-America teams both seasons.
Tarpley has eight caps and four goals at the U-21 level, where she scored two at the 2003 Nordic Cup and two at the 2005 Nordic Cup. She is considered one of the all-time leaders in full U-19 caps. There was also a Lindsay Tarpley appearance at the 1999 USYSA International Tournament against Sweden, Germany, and Japan and at the 2000 USYSA against Australia, China, Japan, and Canada.
Tarpley was also part of the US National Team that won the gold at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics.
