Women’s soccer has a relatively short history compared to the men, but already the sport has produced some tremendous stars like Michelle Akers. Along with Mia Hamm, Akers helped popularize the sport in the United States, especially after Team USA’s incredible victory in the 1999 Women’s World Cup. Born in California, Akers attended the University of Central Florida, where she became a soccer legend before joining the U.S. Women’s National Team. In 15 years on the team, she scored an amazing 105 goals (second only to Hamm) and she earned a gold medal in the 1996 Olympic Games. In 2002, she was named FIFA’s Woman Player of the Century, and of course she is a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Along with Hamm, she was the only other female named to the FIFA 100 list of the greatest soccer players in history. Akers and her husband now live in Florida, where she dedicates her time to the Sundance Horse Rescue and Outreach organization.
