Nadia Comaneci played a big part in the popularization of women’s gymnastics. An incomparable gymnast, Comaneci became the first woman to score a perfect 10 in an Olympic event and concluded her career with five Olympic gold medals, including the all-around at the 1976 games in Montreal at the tender age of 14. Born in Romania, Nadia Comaneci began training with famed Romanian gymnastics coach Bela Karolyi at age 6. Seven years later, she captured the all-around title at the European Championships and began preparing for her Olympic debut. She won three golds, a silver and a bronze in Montreal, and returned to the Olympics in 1980 in Moscow to take home four more medals – two golds and two silvers. Comaneci retired from competition in 1981 but continued to strut her stuff in exhibitions. Today, she actively works for many different charities and, along with her husband, U.S. Olympic gymnast Bart Conner, owns the Bart Conner Gymnastics Academy in Oklahoma.
