The daughter of two former Soviet champion gymnasts, Nastia Liukin began gymnastics at the age of three after spending time in the gym while her parents coached. Her parents actually didn’t intend for her to become a gymnast, knowing how she could get pressured in high-level competitions, but changed their minds when they noticed her skills. Liukin currently trains under her father at the World Olympic Gymnastics Academy, her family’s gymnastics club. The first Nastia Liukin appearance in the National Championships was as a junior in 2002, where she landed one of the final spots on the US National Team.
By 2003, Liukin was one of the most competitive junior gymnasts in the US, winning the US National Championships four times in the all-around and was also a senior National Champion on the uneven bars. As a key member of the US senior team, she has competed in several tournaments and won three golds, two silvers, and two bronzes at the Pan American Games, four golds and five silvers at the World Championships, and one gold, three silvers, and one bronze at the Olympics.
With her medal count of nine in the World Championships, Liukin is tied with Shannon Miller for having won the most medals in the tournament. She has also tied with Miller and Mary Lou Retton’s records of most medals in a single Olympic Games by an American gymnast.
