In 1994, Oksana Baiul rose out of humble beginnings to become the most famous figure skater in the world by winning an Olympic gold medal. Born in what is now the Ukraine, Baiul’s father left when she was young and her mother died of cancer when she was just 13. Baiul then lived and trained with her coach, Galina Zmievskaya. At 15, she won the 1993 World Figure Skating Championships, and the next year defeated Nancy Kerrigan to win an Olympic gold for the Ukraine in the women’s figure skating competition. Injuries brought about the end of Baiul’s Olympic career, but she continued to skate in exhibitions and events like “Broadway on Ice” and in the ice-skating musical “Cold as Ice.”
