To be a successful decathlete, one needs to be versatile. Rafer Johnson certainly is that and more. A native of Texas who became a standout athlete at UCLA, Johnson set record after record in the decathlon. After winning the silver medal in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics, he took gold in the 1960 games in Rome and later was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame. After his athletic career, he moved on to acting and appeared in the James Bond movie “License to Kill” and numerous TV shows, including “Dragnet” and “Lassie.” He has also become an active spokesman for children’s causes and to promote the sport of track and field. Rafer Johnson is also well known for being part of Robert Kennedy’s 1968 presidential campaign and being one of the men who tackled assassin Sirhan Sirhan.
